Did the New York governor say supplying nursing homes with PPE was "not our job"?

YES

During the coronavirus outbreak in New York state, Gov. Andrew Cuomo made clear the state would assume only limited responsibilities for taking care of patients in privately-owned nursing home facilities in the state. Asked in an April 22 news briefing about reported shortages of personal protective equipment, then in limited supply, he explained, "We have been helping them with more PPE. But again, it’s not our job."

The governor said the state's role was limited to regulating home operators and shutting down ones that don't provide staff with the right equipment.

Nursing homes and similar facilities have accounted for a large share of deaths from COVID-19 in New York and other U.S. states. "We’ve tried everything to keep it out of a nursing home, but it’s virtually impossible," Gov. Cuomo said.

Between 2020 and 2022, under close editorial supervision, Gigafact contracted a group of freelance writers and editors to test the concepts for fact briefs and provide inputs to our software development process. We call this effort Gigafact Foundry. Over the course of these two years, Gigafact Foundry writers published over 1500 fact briefs in response to claims they found online. Their important work forms the basis of Gigafact formats and editorial guidelines, and is available to the public on Gigafact.org. Readers should be aware that while there is still a lot of relevant information to be found, not all fact briefs produced by Gigafact Foundry reflect Gigafact's current methods and standards for fact briefs.
