Do polls show strong support among Black and Latino parents for school choice?

Thursday, June 25, 2020
By Claire Zimmerman
YES

In a 2019 poll, charter schools drew 51% percent support among Latino parents and 55% among Black parents. Support for tax credits was measured at 67% among Latino parents and 66% among Black parents. Support for universal vouchers was at 62% for both Latino and Black parents.

Among Democrats, minority support for school choice is much stronger than among whites, creating a dilemma for candidates trying to determine a winning position on related questions. "It’s not clear what is driving the racial divide," Chalkbeat, an education-news site, says, suggesting an influence could be that Black and Hispanic Democrats have more direct experience with charter schools.

ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTOR
Between 2020 and 2022, under close editorial supervision, Gigafact contracted a group of freelance writers and editors to test the concepts for fact briefs and provide inputs to our software development process. We call this effort Gigafact Foundry. Over the course of these two years, Gigafact Foundry writers published over 1500 fact briefs in response to claims they found online. Their important work forms the basis of Gigafact formats and editorial guidelines, and is available to the public on Gigafact.org.
