Does Antifa commonly use an inverted red triangle symbol once used by Nazis?

Saturday, June 20, 2020
By Miriam Himelstein
NO

The most common symbol of Antifa, a loose collection of far-left activist groups, is a black and red double flag. Some European anti-fascist groups have used a red triangle in the past, but they appear to have done so to refer to a symbol of violence used originally against leftist political activists. Mark Bray, in the The Antifascist Handbook, cites its use by a British anti-fascist group in the 1980s.

The red triangle symbol was used by Nazis to mark political prisoners in concentration camps during World War II. It gained attention recently, when used in a Trump campaign ad focused on Antifa.

ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTOR
Between 2020 and 2022, under close editorial supervision, Gigafact contracted a group of freelance writers and editors to test the concepts for fact briefs and provide inputs to our software development process. We call this effort Gigafact Foundry. Over the course of these two years, Gigafact Foundry writers published over 1500 fact briefs in response to claims they found online. Their important work forms the basis of Gigafact formats and editorial guidelines, and is available to the public on Gigafact.org. Readers should be aware that while there is still a lot of relevant information to be found, not all fact briefs produced by Gigafact Foundry reflect Gigafact's current methods and standards for fact briefs.
