The 2020 Global Report on Food Crises, published by a group of UN-related and other aid organizations, estimates that at least 73 million Africans faced "acute food insecurity" even before the threat of the coronavirus clouded the world's outlook.
The COVID-19 pandemic is leading to school closings and other social distancing measures leaving young people out of school and their families out of work, disrupting trading networks and potentially preventing aid from getting to those who need it. The World Food Program focuses concern especially on Africa and the Middle East, and warns the pandemic's impact could disrupt the nutrition of another 130 million people in afflicted countries.
