The majority of the estimated seven million people who die prematurely because of air pollution do so because of indoor air pollution from cooking fuels, according to the World Health Organization. The WHO says around three billion people cook over open fires or with simple stoves fueled by kerosene, wood, dung, crop waste or coal.
About half of all pneumonia deaths among children under five are linked to soot from these sources.
