The ban, which prohibits businesses from requiring patrons to show proof of vaccinations to get service, was part of a law signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis on May 3 suspending COVID-19 restrictions.

The legislation gives the Republican governor sweeping powers to invalidate local emergency measures put in place during the pandemic — including mask mandates, limitations on business operations and the shuttering of schools.

The law takes effect July 1. DeSantis said he would issue an executive order to quickly enact some of the provisions, including the preemption of existing coronavirus measures enacted by local governments. Even before the legislation, the governor signed an executive order on April 2, 2021, barring government entities from issuing vaccine passports and prohibiting businesses from requiring them.
