Has Hispanic support for Trump strengthened since 2016?

Thursday, August 6, 2020
By Maxwell Craig
YES

In a Marist College poll in June, 39% of U.S. Hispanics expressed support for President Trump, indicating stronger support than in 2016, when Trump won 28% of the Hispanic vote. Other polls have highlighted Trump's improved performance.

The same poll reported general approval for the President among Hispanics at 32%. Expressed voting preferences may reflect the appeal of Trump's economic policies. Pro-business attitudes among some Latinos have "driven their support for the Republican Party since at least the Nixon years," historian Geraldo Cadava writes.

The Hispanic Journal of Behavioral Sciences found that Hispanic voters in 2016 rated economic policy as the most important issue, followed by health care and education. It noted that Hispanic voters tended to be more conservative than the general Hispanic population.

ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTOR
Between 2020 and 2022, under close editorial supervision, Gigafact contracted a group of freelance writers and editors to test the concepts for fact briefs and provide inputs to our software development process. We call this effort Gigafact Foundry. Over the course of these two years, Gigafact Foundry writers published over 1500 fact briefs in response to claims they found online. Their important work forms the basis of Gigafact formats and editorial guidelines, and is available to the public on Gigafact.org. Readers should be aware that while there is still a lot of relevant information to be found, not all fact briefs produced by Gigafact Foundry reflect Gigafact's current methods and standards for fact briefs.
