On June 9, Seattle police boarded up and shut a precinct office in an area of the city's Capitol Hill neighborhood that had been the scene of repeated clashes with demonstrators following the death of George Floyd. The zone has been declared "autonomous" from the city by protestors.
The city's police chief has said that the precinct's closure means that officers are responding more slowly to calls for aid. "It’s taking us three times the amount of time for priority 1 calls in the area and almost an hour for priority 2 calls.” Chief Carmen Best said in a June 12 ABC interview. On June 15, Best reiterated that the police can respond anywhere in the city they are needed, and that officials are "working hard to get a peaceful resolution" to the protest.
