The U.S. lost 22 million jobs in March and April, and is still down about 13 million jobs from the pre-pandemic employment levels early in 2020. About 9.1 million were added back in May, June and July as temporary layoffs eased in parts of the economy.
Unemployment in July remained slightly higher than the worst point of the Great Recession in 2007-2009. "There is still much work to be done to return to the strong Trump Economy that prevailed before COVID-19 struck," the White House says. During the last administration the recovery from that recession saw 11.6. million jobs added.
