In May the Small Business Administration wrote to local affiliates of Planned Parenthood asking them to return funds received under the agency's Paycheck Protection Program, which was enacted in March to help offset the economic impact of the coronavirus shutdowns. The SBA said it had determined that the local units were part of a large national organization, and hence disqualified under its final rules for the program. Planned Parenthood affiliates had collectively applied for 38 separate loans, totaling more than $80 million.
Federal funding of any sort for Planned Parenthood is a contentious issue. GOP senators have asked the Justice Department for a further investigation. Democratic senators have asked the SBA and the Treasury to call off its "ideologically-driven" action.
