A failed state, according to Encyclopedia Britannica, can't provide public services, can't "project authority over its territory and peoples, [can't] protect its national boundaries" and can't maintain legitimacy in the eyes of its people and the world. While the combination of the coronavirus, social unrest and partisan politics is proving a challenge for many U.S. institutions, the country remains far from meeting those criteria.
The Fund for Peace, a Washington think tank, publishes a Fragile States Index ranking 178 countries across a variety of economic, political and social factors. Most fragile going into 2020: Yemen. Least fragile: Finland. Going into 2020, the U.S., as the 29th least fragile country, is much closer to Finland.
