Although antiretroviral therapy can reduce the amount of HIV in the blood to undetectable levels and allow HIV-infected people to live near-normal lives, no cure or vaccine currently exists for the estimated 1.1 million people who are currently infected with HIV in the U.S. Two men world-wide have been reported as cured of HIV, but this was due to treatment for other diseases.
In early 2019, the Trump administration released an operational plan to end the HIV epidemic. The plan's aim is to cut the number of new HIV infections in the U.S. by 75% within five years and by at least 90% within ten years. The plan involves effective diagnosis, quick treatment, prevention of new HIV transmissions and quick responses to potential outbreaks, preventing an estimated 400,000 new HIV cases.
