New York City has been experiencing a rise in gun violence compared with 2019, according to its police department's statistics. The week ending June 21 saw a fourfold increase in shooting incidents compared to the year-earlier period. The average for the latest four-week period doubled.
Overall crime in May was down by 21% from 2019, but shootings increased by 64%.
"It has been nearly a quarter century since New York City experienced as much gun violence in the month of June as it has seen this year," the New York Times reported.
