Are Hispanics divided about taking a harder line on immigration?

Hispanic Americans generally support finding a legal way for unauthorized immigrants to stay in the U.S.--83% say it's important or somewhat important in a Pew Research poll in early 2020. Beyond that, priorities on related questions vary with political preferences and other factors. Hispanic Republicans emphasize border security, while Hispanic Democrats prioritize refugee care and opportunities to gain citizenship.

A June survey by Unidos, the largest Hispanic civil-rights advocacy group, found that about 37% of Hispanics have voted for a Republican candidate in the past. The strongest Republican support in the community is expressed by Cuban-Americans and higher-income earners. Dissatisfaction with how current administration policies treat immigrants could undermine past levels of support, the survey found.
