Did fears of food shortages prompt civil unrest in South Africa?

South Africa's moves to slow the spread of the coronavirus affected schools and food programs that feed large numbers of poor South Africans. The measures resulted in protests and some violence in mid-April, but the initial violence appears to have subsided.
Charities have stepped up to try feed underserved populations. On April 21 the South African government announced a large relief program including faster and more efficient food assistance.
