Two members of the New York City Council combed through the city's crime data to rebut police claims that a January, 2020, spike in crime was linked to bail policies that had taken effect the previous month. They found that only a fraction of crimes--accounting for at most 7% of the overall increase in the month--could be linked to those released from custody without bail. "Your numbers don't add up," they said in a letter to the Police Commissioner.
